BCF Visit to City of 10,000 Buddhas

On September 28th (Sunday), we will be visiting the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, which is located in Ukiah, Mendocino County, about 110 miles north of San Francisco.  According to its website at www.cttbusa.org/cttbtour/cttb_photos.asp, the CTTB “occupies an area of 488 acres, of which about 80 acres are presently been used. The rest of the land includes meadows, orchards, and forests. Large institutional buildings and smaller residential houses are scattered over the west side of the property. The main Buddha hall and monastic facilities, the educational institutes, the administrative offices, the main kitchen and dining hall, the vegetarian canteen, and supporting structures are all located in this complex. The environment is quiet and peaceful. The air is fresh and pure.  In the City, the light house of world Buddhism, there is no discrimination regarding religion, race, nationality, or age. We welcome people who devote themselves to the search for happiness and peace for the human race, and to the investigation of the universal truth of life. Let us work together to save the world!”

The BCF will arrange a comfortable bus that holds 52 persons.  We will leave the church parking lot at 7 am, enjoy a guided tour and delicious vegetarian lunch at the CTTB, and visit the Sutter Home Family Vineyards in Napa Valley on the way home.  We will be guided on the royal tour and wine-tasting experience by winemaker David Oda, son of members Tom and Nancy Oda.  The $25 fee covers the bus transportation, lunch, winery tour, and plenty of snacks on the bus.  The bus trip should be both educational and fun.  Be sure to submit the registration form on the enclosed flyer with a check to cover the trip fee to reserve your place on the bus ASAP.

As a modern-day response to Western psychology, several Japanese psychotherapies have evolved from the Buddhist tradition in the last century.  The two most popular forms, Naikan and Morita, have emerged from the two largest sects in Japan: Jodo Shin and Zen.  This lecture will address the basic differences between Jodo Shin and Zen Buddhism and how their teachings and practice are reflected in Naikan Therapy and Morita Therapy respectively.  Examples of the applications of the two therapies in Western culture will be explored and discussed.
